While not as enthralling as Through A Glass darkly, it’s alternate view of belief is just as strong.
Need to rewatch it, but it stays in my memory as one of my favourite movies. The mood and subtle development of the characters are perfect.

Winter Light is kind of brilliant in how it explores themes of nihilism through religiosity. There are so many things great about this movie
Very deep, heavily emotional, as per Bergman. Undertones about the human need for a purpose in life (through religion or love)
Pretty slow even for Bergman, or even “boring” as his then-wife described it. It’s fascinating seeing its influence on First Reformed.

As children in the loving Ekdahl family, Fanny and Alexander enjoy a happy life with their parents, who run a theater company. After their father dies unexpectedly, however, the siblings end up in a joyless home when their mother, Emilie, marries a stern bishop. The bleak situation gradually grows worse as the bishop becomes more controlling, but dedicated relatives make a valiant attempt to aid Emilie, Fanny and Alexander.
Bruno Stroszek is released from prison and warned to stop drinking. He has few skills and fewer expectations: with a glockenspiel and an accordion, he ekes out a living as a street musician. He befriends Eva, a prostitute down on her luck and they join his neighbor, Scheitz, an elderly eccentric, when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin.

Balthazar, whose life parallels that of his first keeper, Marie, is truly a beast of burden, suffering the sins of humankind. But despite his powerlessness, he accepts his fate nobly.
