If you can get past the tedious use of Canon in D, this is a powerful film with everyone, including director Redford, doing their best work

Such an underrated best picture winner! Amazing & accurate depiction of depression. Maybe the best put on film. And this came out in 1980!!!

A well-made psychological film with enough suspense. Being the first film by a director is a huge success.

Builds a gut-wrenching tragedy w/o explicit imgs, just casual convos &tension. So hard to nail. Mclass acting, Redford kills it as director.

Powerful melodrama led by strong performances and a realistic level of nuance in the relationships.

Intensely sad, but phenomenally acted. All three performances were top tier. This is a watch-once classic.

Gripping raw drama about a family in various stages of grief & denial, fascinating performances & character work, rough watch but worth it
Alan John Gerstle

Hutton shines in this mystery to find source of a brother's depression. Hirsch as thoughtful therapist. Sutherland odd as passive husband.

How a family copes after tragedy. Heartbreaking. The casting was perfect, but Mary Tyler Moore is over the moon!!
