A harrowing depiction of what war does to innocent lives. Stunning animation blends nightmares of the mind with nightmares of real war

This movie allows you to take comfort in it's formal abstraction before tearing it all away with its terrific reality -check ending.

Majestic in scope, the film is Kurosawa's late-life masterpiece, a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.
