When Schrader is at his best, he writes of lonely male despair and the empty dream of a modern meaningful death better than anyone in film.
A powerful story about guilt, depression, and loss of hope.

Bleak film with a mesmerizing dominance of weirdness. Climate change fears and an increasing crisis of faith. Hawke is splendid.
Stunningly morbid, capitalised by a brilliant lead performance from Hawke.
Hawke is excellent, the music when it happens is haunting, and in a positive sense, it was reminiscent for me of both Fargo and Calvary.
