Documents the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

The fake exposes the real for being made up of a fake fabric. This film does just that.

Never seen anything like this. Swift, unique editing. A dizzying, multi-faceted sort-of documentary w/fiction woven in. Welles is entrancing

A unique and unconventional documentary, exploring blurred lines between truth and fiction. May be a bit too experimental for some

An iconic and groundbreaking documentary. Welles makes a clever point by saying every art is deceiving and every artist is in a way, a fraud

A great essay film with engrossing stories and interesting insight into the ”trickery” that makes filmmaking seem magical.
