Several stories tangentially related to an NY smoke shop. They swirl, linger, and dissipate, just like smoke; settle back & breathe it in.
This was possibly my first 'art house' film and it planted a seed; not every film needs action, special effects or even a plot to be good.
31/2* Indie about a group of characters that connect to a Brooklyn smoke shop. Chance encounters create emotional ties that bind & heal.
Like a 2-hour smoke break...calm, reflective and casual but with serious undertones and human drama on the back-burner. Indie Treat! 9/10
The ensemble of Keitel, Hurt, Perrineau, Whitaker and Channing made this Brooklyn crossing-paths story engaging.
This movies captures a lot of the feeling that you feel when you go to a coffee shop and start to remember past events with an old friend...
Smoke isn’t slow but has a calm gentle burn. Pioneering film in the indie movement with great performances. Keitel shines in particular.
This movie needs a big ole injection of plot. Less than nothing happens in this movie and the dialogue is worthless

Writer Paul Benjamin is nearly hit by a bus when he leaves Auggie Wren's smoke shop. Stranger Rashid Cole saves his life, and soon middle-aged Paul tells homeless Rashid that he wouldn't mind a short-term housemate. Still grieving over his wife's murder, Paul is moved by both Rashid's quest to reconnect with his father and Auggie's discovery that a woman who might be his daughter is about to give birth.
A wacky group of locals visit the neighborhood cigar shop, looking for good times and finding plenty of hilarious fun. But when the greedy owner threatens to close the shop for good and turn it into a trendy vegetarian restaurant, the neighborhood proves they'll do just about anything to save their favorite hangout.
