A bitter sweet tale that brings to life the edginess of circus life and ties it in with real existential issues
If you don't 'get' why this film is great, stick to blockbusters and superheroes.
Good direction but I'm not a fan of characters who are miserable with no apparent flaws of their own

A simply deceptive film from Fellini. Masina is childlike and awesome!!! Quinn is brutish, but realizes his sins and is broken.
Seeing Fellini direct in a more brutal realist manner makes for sobering and scintillating viewing.

A solid film and great performance from Masina in the lead. However, this one pales in comparison to Fellini's later work.

Impoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. Alone, his wife, Sarbojaya, looks after her rebellious daughter, Durga, and her young son, Apu, as well as Harihar's elderly aunt Indir. The children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, while their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them.
Art film producer Jeremy Prokosch, unhappy with the work of his director, hires Fritz Lang (as himself) to direct an adaptation of The Odyssey, but when it seems that the legendary filmmaker is making a picture destined to bomb, he brings in a screenwriter to energise the script. The professional intersects with the personal when a rift develops between the writer and his wife.

Balthazar, whose life parallels that of his first keeper, Marie, is truly a beast of burden, suffering the sins of humankind. But despite his powerlessness, he accepts his fate nobly.
