This is the movie The Departed is based on. Imo better due to its runtime and pacing, but suffers from some melodramatic 90s editing.
This is the original. The Departed is a good copy4 years later. The original is brilliantly acted but no Oscar. *****
I loved this film, but what struck me as weird about it was it had the same plot and actor (and one scene) as the subplot of Hard Boiled.
They should have had a mole walk across the balcony railing at the end of the movie. That would have bumped this up to 4 stars.
Leagues better than The Departed. Good suspense and doesn’t bash you over the head with lazy attempts at symbolism

The early 2000’s style editing is off putting, but the story, action, characters, performances and cinematography are all great.
The film The Departed was a remake of, this film is deeper, more emotional, more moving without the star Hollywood cast. 8/10

In this prequel to the original, a bloody power struggle among the Triads coincides with the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, setting up the events of the first film.
