Watched this on a whim (thanks Criterion) and was taken with how weird and sad it was. Worth a watch.
An interesting watch, very reminiscent of John Cassavetes’s work
Up there with 'Breathless' & Cassavetes, an indie-improv film that should be a classic. Written, directed, starring Loden as a sadeyed lady.
Very understated. Amazingly subtle first film for Loden.
A dry and painfully realist story on a depressed working-class woman going through life
Written by, directed by, and starring Barbara Loden as a very lost and troubled woman who life is happening to instead of the opposite.
Taps into something, a sort of nostalgia for the road.
I don't think it's some groundbreaking masterpiece some people make out to be but a really great piece of work nonetheless.
Loden somehow manages to build up a ridiculous amount of emotion without the viewer realizing until the end of the film when you're in tears
America envisioned through a singular woman; a land of freedom – a state of day-dreaming – a woman in a meaningless, black world.
