I can’t believe Peter Weir made back-to-back films that involve Mel Gibson running after someone who is about to die.
Well crafted romance drama, one of Weirs best movies
Weir’s last Australian film works as both a romance and a historical drama. Hunt steals every scene she’s in.
Excellent portrayal of expat life and emerging world politics in a suspenseful story. The casting of Linda Hunt was genius.
Lots of style but a pretty hollow plot. While very pretty, it’s hard not to notice it’s shallowness

While the movie meanders halfway in, the cinematography and unique setting make up for its acting and plot flaws.
The butch dwarf lesbian in this film is meant to be a male who’s supposedly younger than Gibson. Knowing this beforehand will save confusion
