It's since been overshadowed but for it's time the scale is unreal. Several moments I was awestruck with how much they crammed in there.
3 hours inevitably drags at times. I was pleasantly surprised by welcomed doses of humor. Some truly remarkable battle scenes for the time.
I watched this in school, which began my appreciation for the genre. This is very long and dry and old, yet still a classic

What a cast! Everyone is on top form and the battle sequences are engaging and appropriately huge feeling. A good older film.
Saving Priv Ryan obscured this older b&w D-Day. Actors include some from real DDay make it more personal & perspective is from both sides.

The story of Operation Market Garden—a failed attempt by the allies in the latter stages of WWII to end the war quickly by securing three bridges in Holland allowing access over the Rhine into Germany. A combination of poor allied intelligence and the presence of two crack German panzer divisions meant that the final part of this operation (the bridge in Arnhem over the Rhine) was doomed to failure.
