Cosmo Vittelli, the proprietor of a sleazy, low-rent Hollywood cabaret, has a real affection for the women who strip in his peepshows and the staff who keep up his dingy establishment. He also has a major gambling problem that has gotten him in trouble before. When Cosmo loses big-time at an underground casino run by mobster Mort, he isn't able to pay up. Mort then offers Cosmo the chance to pay back his debt by knocking off a pesky, Mafia-protected bookie.

Camera work was crazy, story was meh. Film students have a reason to watch.
Camera work is amazing and performances. The pacing and overall feel is sluggish which hurts it a little.
Gazzara runs seedy Burlesque club. Mob makes deal: kill Chinese gangster, he'll be free of debt. A Sad, desperate lonely world
Although this is a crime thriller, the characters emotions and human characteristics come first.
Cassavetes makes a venture into noir/crime thriller, elevated by an excellent performance from Ben Gazzara.
The occasional striking image can't save this from being one of the most flabby, crawling, meandering films I've ever seen.
I did not pay attention to a single minute of this. So sorry Johnny
Interesting filmmaking techniques but unbearably slow and the overall point seems lost. Might be due a rewatch.
Some very stylish filmmaking and solid production choices. Pretty weak story honestly but it’s still enjoyable
Doesn’t play to John Cassavetes’ strengths as a filmmaker, but he still puts his all into it.
