A stone-cold masterpiece. Shepitko’s sweeping and soulful direction and the complex performances build into the beauty of The Ascent.

Superb gut-wrenching film about the personal struggles of survival vs. morality two soldiers face during the war.

Brings you closer and closer to the edge of the world before pushing you off.
Broke my heart. Considering the time it was made it is a pretty good film. Only would recommend to an audience versed with Russian films
Some heavy Soviet winter to get me in the mood for winter 2025-26. Some gorgeous and dramatic shots. 7/10
Solonitsyn acts immaculate in this. First time I’ve seen him outside of a Tarkovsky film and he’s equally as compelling, if not more.
Russian War movies never miss.
