Undescribable!!! Art and meaning, deeply and beautifully intertwined. A respectful ode to loyalty.
More of a drama than your typical samurai film, but a masterfully made one all the same. The ending fight scene is one of the best in cinema
Wonderful if for nothing else than the insight into Tokugawa era political drama.
More brilliance from the classic era of Japanese samurai Cinema
One of the greatest movies in cinematic history. True masterpiece.
Not as good as Harakiri but still a really solid samurai movie. Great cast and interesting story but too long and drawn out in places.
Another masterpiece of the Japanese tragedy.
Toshiro Mifune spends two hours calmly deciding whether to destroy the entire feudal system. Eventually he does. Absolute king behavior.
The template here -- a stolid man broken down by the system until he does the unthinkable -- doesn't get much better treatment than this.
Its a good movie. Very similar to Harakiri. Too similar even. Sadly, it makes me think Kobayashi might be a one trick pony. :-/
